The 2012 CEL/ELC Forum “Rethinking Multilingualism: Challenges and Opportunities”, held at the Institut Libre Marie Haps in Brussels on 30 November – 1 December, was the final event of 2012 for the CEL/ELC. The event brought the year to a successful conclusion, bringing together partners from around Europe to discuss the changing landscape of Multilingualism in Europe. With experts from a variety of disciplines, in addition to important contributions by the European Commission and the Council of Europe’s European Centre for Modern Languages, we managed to highlight both the barriers and possibilities that await us if we are to achieve a truly multilingual Europe, covering a number of specialized topics and themes.
This year’s Forum also marked the 15-year anniversary of the foundation of the organisation. We were very pleased to celebrate this milestone with a large event that highlighted the diversity and dynamism of our membership base, while drawing in many new faces. In the coming years, it will be important to foster a generation shift by continuing to encourage and welcome new member Institutions from around Europe, without sacrificing the innovation and sustainability that has ensured our active role in European Multilingual affairs for 15 years. In this, events of this kind will be important to share ideas, network, and foster links among colleagues in diverse realms.
